Volunteering to go off the EDGE

If you’re keen to have a chat to a cheerful and committed supporter of the Foundation, one who also knows the value of community volunteering, then Andrea Johns would be the perfect choice.

Andrea, together with her husband James and two children, moved back home to Tasmania four years ago as her family took up the reins of a third generation family business based in Hobart. Through that connection to a major sponsor of the RHHRF, Andrea began to find out more about our work and swiftly saw an opportunity to give back even more by stepping in as one of our most valuable volunteers.

And she really hit the ground running! With a background in nursing and describing herself as “adaptable”, Andrea has worn many hats as a volunteer, assisting at many RHHRF events in so many ways over the years, while also using her networks to secure much-needed donations for prizes in our fundraising activities.

But beyond her work as a volunteer, Andrea also dives in as an energetic participant at our events too! She says her most memorable moment was participating in the Edge abseil event, when she shimmied down Wrest Point Casino (Tasmania’s tallest building) in a bright yellow Pikachu costume (from Pokemon fame!).

Andrea was our highest fundraiser for 2016 and we loved her approach. “Every time I reached my target, I just made it higher,” she explained.

“It was just so much fun being involved. The view and adrenaline was just amazing, as was the satisfaction of encouraging others to participate and raising these vital funds. I strongly believe in the work of the RHHRF - it is a cause that gives great value to the community. The friendly team are amazing to work with and always available for help and support.”
